About the deal and the company

The Company

International Martial Arts, Kung Fu, and Meditation Training Retreat in the northern part of Mae Hong Son, Thailand's remote North Western province.

Beautiful Thailand Location

The Nam Yang Tat Mo Mountain Training Camp in Thailand

If you have ever been to Thailand before, you will know that there is nowhere like it! We love Thailand, which is why we are here. We offer a unique opportunity to pursue Chinese martial arts seriously whilst enjoying the fantastic Thai atmosphere – set in the Mountains of Northern Thailand. All of our training areas have breathtaking mountain views which change constantly according to weather, season and time of day. They give an emotional charge which helps us train that bit better. If you are considering going to train in Asia, why not train somewhere nice?

Famous International Teachers

Our world-class teachers

We endeavour to engage the best kung fu masters. All of our teachers are long term members of Nam Yang and all teach the same arts – no confusion, no contradictions. Master Tan has 57 years of martial arts experience behind him. Iain has 28 years experience, is a two-time world champion. All teachers speak perfectly fluent English – We are an international organisation and our teachers are used to dealing with people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds, so our instructors always excited to take on new students.

First Class Arts

Kung Fu training in the mountains

Our arts are part of the direct Shaolin lineage as founded by the monk Tat Moh  approx 520AD. They are not modernised or simplified. They are some of the most effective still practised. We build mind, body, spirit and energy. We build confidence, self respect and self esteem. We know what sets our students apart is not the art they practice, but who they become during the process – we strive to give people an opportunity to grow as individuals.

We train in:

  • Shaolin Tiger Crane Kung Fu

  • Shuang Yang Pei Ho Rou Rouan Chien

  • Shaolin Weapons

  • San Da (Chinese Boxing)

  • Iron Shirt Chi Kung

  • Vein Tendon Chi Kung

  • Meditation

  • Tong Ling (Clearing and Circulating) Chi Kung

Food

Eating at the Mountain Training Camp

Quality food is essential for martial artists in hard training. We have our own kitchen garden, herb garden and fruit trees. We hope soon to be fully self sufficient for rice, corn and eggs, largely self sufficient for vegetables and to produce some of our own fruit, fish and meat. What we don’t grow ourselves, we choose carefully. We prepare local style food but use selected medicinal herbs to improve its value. Our diet is calculated to best support our kung fu training and mediation vitality: we understand that we are what we eat!

Comfortable Living Quarters

We offer comfortable facilities with beds, shelf spaces, showers and bathrooms in every room. The retreat is also outfitted with widely available electricity and a wifi connection. Laundry service is also available for a small fee.

A Friendly Environment

_MG_0629We believe that providing a social environment is vital to fostering a positive training and meditation experience. There is always exposure to great new people, and many of our visitors come away forming relationships that they will hold on to for the rest of their lives.

Top Notch Training Facilities

Training in our training area
Our covered training areaOur covered training area is 13m by 13m and fully covered in good quality mats. It is roofed but has open sides so that a breeze flows through. This design means that it can be used throughout the day, even when hot.

Our open training area is 18m by 18m with stunning views and a concrete floor.

Our training circuit has many pieces of specialised training equipment constructed so as to blend with the natural environment.

A Great Town Nearby

Pai pic

We are a 5-10 minute ride / drive from Pai. It is a tourist town with very many amenities and a lot going on. There is every opportunity to hit the town and have some fun when you are not training.

Small Groups, Personalized Training & Choice of Courses

Personalised training

Group sizes are usually small. Martial Arts training is generally tailored to suit the individual, real Kung Fu is not something which can be mass produced. We will be happy to give you an estimate how many other people will be staying at the time when you want to book.

We run a wide variety of courses and residential options so as to best suit individual needs. We interview each student on arrival and further tailor their training to their individual requirements.

Fresh Air

All of our training involves Chi Kung. Put in the simplest terms, this involves breathing in fresh chi energy. The north of Thailand is world famous for having some of the world’s best chi, which flows down from the Himalayan mountains, the roof of the world. We are located so as to make our chi kung as effective as possible by taking advantage of the best quality chi. It works – as you will very quickly find out when you come to train with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. I’ve never done martial arts before, is the mountain retreat only for experienced people?

No, anyone is welcome to join us ! Everyone trains and practices meditation at their own pace, stays as long as they want, and learns as much they want.

2.How do I get to your place?

I. To Thailand: First, the best way to get to Pai is Fly to Bangkok or Chiang Mai.  Chiang Mai is much nearer but Bangkok has more flights and is usually cheaper. There is an abundance of hotels, guest houses etc in Bangkok to suit all budgets, should you need to arrange an overnight stay.

- If you decide to fly to Bangkok, budget flights to Chiang Mai can be booked online or on the top floor of Suvarnabhumi (Bangkok) International Airport. They are very cheap.

Sleeper trains to Chiang Mai are also available. They are comfortable, provide good views of the beautiful Thai countryside, and cost about half of the price of flights

Overnight buses leaving from the famous Khaosan Road in Bangkok to Chiang Mai are the cheapest option, but may be less comfortable.

We can recommend guest houses in Chiang Mai if requested.

II. To Pai: It is easiest to book a minibus for the last leg of your journey to Pai. For about 400 Baht, you will be taken in an air con minibus on a 3 and a half hour breath taking drive along the stunning, winding, mountain roads to Pai. We will pick you up from the minibus offices.

Alternatively, you can fly from Chiang Mai to Pai in which case we will pick you up from Pai airport. If you need help planning your journey, please email us.

3.What will I need during my stay?

Most of what you need when in Thailand can be bought here cheaply.

You should consider bringing:

  • Your kung fu uniform, if you have one
  • Small selection of comfortable clothes (warm clothing for the nights during winter)

  • Laptop

  • Camera

  • Weapons

  • Wash kit

4. Am I going to get hurt if I come train?

While we can’t guarantee that accidents won’t happen, the experience at the Nam Yang Training Center is designed to completely safe.  We have never had a serious accident, and everyone who comes here is encouraged to push themselves only to a level they are comfortable with, and only end up increasing their health, stamina and flexibility. We also teach many forms of meditation that are designed to increase vitality, and these are techniques that anyone can take with them. Additionally, we have tea breaks during training and often discuss the value of different foods and teas during meals. However, visitors should keep in mind that we are not liable for any injuries they may incur during their stay.

5. I am a female travelling alone, is it safe for me to come by myself?

Yes, Thailand is an extremely safe place. Thai culture is one based on politeness and social harmony, and as such, the crime rate is extremely low, if present at all. So females travelling alone should not worry about any danger.

6. What kind of Visa should I get?

This information is accurate for most western countries.  You are advised to check the website of your country’s Thai embassy / consulate if in any doubt. When enrolling for a two year instructor course, you will need to apply for a student visa, and we will provide the supporting documentation that you need.

Short Stay (up to 30 days): Upon arrival at immigration in Thailand, you will be issued 30 day tourist visa for free.

7. What is the student-teacher ratio at Nam Yang Mountain Retreat?

We try to keep the groups small and the lessons intimate to maximize learning and enjoyment. The general ratio is about 6 students to every one instructor.

8. Do the masters really speak fluent English?

Many martial arts schools will claim that their masters speak English, when in fact there are only a couple of translators on the premise, and masters who know little to no English. But here, all of our masters speak fluent English and regularly interact with all visitors.

9. Do I need insurance?

You are strongly advised to take out travel insurance.  Whilst it is rare that anyone claims it, it is often best to be on the safe side.
